As far as my personal gear goes, it all starts with my cymbals. As a young player, I played Zildjians, and some of those very first cymbals I still have and use. I do vary my set-up quite a bit, but here are some common situations and the gear I use there. All my cymbals are Zildjian.
Big Band
24" K Constantinople (or 22 Renaissance)
20" PreAged (with one rivet)
22" Swish Knocker
18" K Crash
17" K Crash
14" K Light Hats
Smaller group settings
21" K Custom Special Dry
20" K Constantinople (with one rivet)
20" K Custom Flat Ride
16" K EFX
14" Old New Beat Bottom HiHat
14" K Crash HiHat Top
My stick bag is full of ProMark gear, and I'm proud to play their brand. I have a custom designed Jim Rupp model 8A drum stick. It seems to hit a sweet spot between a 7A and a 5A. It's plays fast and gets a great cymbal sound with the teardrop tip. Here's what's in my Miller's Amish Leatherwork's Stick Bag......
ProMark 8A Jim Rupp
ProMark Cafe Jazz Maple (the best ultra light stick there is)
ProMark 11A Joe Morello (for snare drum workouts, thanks Joe!!)
ProMark Brooms
ProMark TB4 Brushes
ProMark MT3 Mallets
On my drums you'll find all Remo heads. The response and sound of Remo heads has been on my drums since junior high school, and they have never failed me.
Tops of toms and snare, Coated Ambassadors
Bottom of toms, Clear Ambassadors
Bass Drum Front Resonant Head is a Fiberskyn
Bass Drum Batter is a Clear Powerstroke 3 (on my 18 drum, the ring is hand trimmed to 1/2 it's normal dimension)
As far as the drums themselves, I have been playing Noble and Cooley drums for quite a few years now, and I just love them. You can tighten them up for that classic "bop" sound, or tune them low for a big fat low end.... and they never loose their focus or resonance. I love them. Here are my sizes.....
12 X 8 mounted tom
14 X 14 floor tom
20 X 15 bass drum (big band)
18 X 14 bass drum (smaller group settings)
14 X 6 Aluminum Alloy Snare (big band)
14 X 6 CD Maple Snare (smaller group settings)
